On September 3, 1999, Lawrence "Don" Brooks was reported as missing to the Miami County Sheriff's department. On September 10, 1999, the dismembered body of Mr. Brooks was retrieved from a large plastic trash can found floating in Walden Pond near 66th and Bradshaw Road, Shawnee, KS. The lid to the trash container had been attached with a chain and padlock. Preliminary autopsy results indicate that Mr. Brooks died as a result of blunt-force trauma, and that the dismemberment occurred post-mortem.

The investigation is concentrated on a former employee of Mr. Brooks, Elmahi Mohamed-Zian, a Sundanese National. It is believed that Zian is actively eluding the authorities and may have in fact fled the country.

A $5,000 reward has been established for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of Zian.
